It is not a secret that I love a puff sleeve top. And honestly, searching for the perfect buttons excites me. I bought these from Golden D’or here in Dallas. They have a maze of a room filled with shelves on every wall. These shelves are stacked with cases of all kinds of different styles and colors of buttons. I would advise you to have an idea on what you want before heading into a room like that.
When thrifting I am always on the lookout for that perfect jar of random buttons and notions. I will let you know when I find a treasure like that.
I find it quite funny that my last two tops have started as dresses. One day I will make a dress without deciding to rip it in two.
Pattern: McCall 7947 (View B)
Size: Cut a small but had to take it in
Fabric: Linen from Joann’s
The Process: I cut a size small, which was too big for me, so I did end up taking in the front elastic on both sides. There are always new challenges with every project. I hadn’t sewn a sleeve in years, never worked with linen or elastic casings. Luckily, linen was a breeze to work with and perfect for the mild weather we have in Texas. I was confused at first with the elastic but once I had the hang of it, it came easily. After I finished the dress and tried it on I saw that it was way to big for me so I ended up cutting it into a top. First, I closed the pockets up by sewing at 5/8″ seam allowance and then removed the pockets. Lastly, I cut the excessive fabric and finishing hemmed it with a slip stitch.
Finish: 3 thread serge
LOVED: The instructions and pictures were clear. I also really like how the back of the top dropped lower that the front. It was a pleasant surprise when trying it on.
Next time:
- Cutting my right size would have been nice but a couple quite alterations fixed it nicely
